Carpal Tunnel
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve has been compressed or squeezed. This nerve controls the flow of feeling to the hand and fingers. The carpal tunnel is a narrow channel of ligament and bones that houses the median nerve. When the median nerve becomes compressed, patients feel pain or numbness through the hand and wrist. At times the pain radiates up the arm.
Symptoms of CTS typically begin with burning, tingling, or itching sensations. Numbness in the palm of the hand is also a common symptom. The symptoms can occur in one hand or in both. The symptoms then graduate to "tingling" feelings and loss of hand strength and grip in the hand. In some cases the muscles at the bottom of the thumb may deteriorate.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be caused by many different factors but they all tend to apply pressure to the median nerve. CTS can also be caused by some injury or trauma to the hand, wrist or arm involving the median nerve but these cases are less common. There is a common misconception that carpel tunnel is a repetitive stress injury caused by repetitive movements, such as typing. However, there is little evidence to support this claim.
The causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are mostly genetic rather than environmental, but prevention is not impossible. Many believe that CTS can be prevented by maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding repetitive stress on the hands and arms. If you suffer from CTS and are looking for relief, call Texas Orthopedics Sports Medicine today to schedule an appointment with one of our CTS specialists.
