Joint Replacement
Most people have never heard of the term Arthroplasty but it's actually quite common with nearly 1 million Americans having the procedure each year. Arthroplasty is an orthopedic surgery procedure where dysfunctional bones and joints are replaced with an orthopedic prosthesis. This procedure becomes necessary when healthy cartilage either becomes damaged or deteriorates. This causes bones to rub together and is quite painful. When cartilage is merely damaged, it can be repaired or replaced but once the entire joint has suffered, it's time for a joint replacement.
If caught early enough, treatment options can include arthritis medication, steroids or even mucoviscous injections. Initially, our physicians will attempt minimally invasive therapies whenever possible and use total joint replacement as a last measure. The doctors at www.tosm.org keep up with the advances in orthopedic surgery and use the latest joint replacement implants to ensure the most mileage possible for the prosthesis. Such advances include computer-assisted procedures which help doctors make the most precise incisions helping keep your joints more balanced. To give our patients a variety of options, we can offer a prosthesis made of ceramic, metal on metal, or metal on polyethylene.
Many of our patients come to us for bi-lateral replacements (both knees or hips) but we also perform single replacements. Our expertise extends beyond the typical knee and hip replacements onto shoulders, ankles, feet, hands and wrists. Texas Orthopedic Sports Medicine is committed to provide the highest quality of orthopedic care for our patients.
